In this next installment of making it as an artist I’m going to cover what I did in respects to my direct mail campaign. Direct mail is VERY important in soliciting your services to publishers/magazines etc. Some companies want an inquiry letter first, some want samples on disc, others want tearsheets . . . but most will look at a simple postcard that represents your art and message. Art directors don’t have a lot of time to be going through a million samples anyways so they want to see something that fits their immediate need, at the same time seeing that you’re a professional. Here’s my most successful postcard to date: (more…)

Simply put . . . everything. What I’m about to tell you is something the powers that be don’t want you to know. I’m not new to this subject as I’ve been studying the mind and everything having to do with the subject for years. Even experimenting with this in my own life has enabled me to realize that what I’m saying is true. Matter of fact it’s true regardless of your belief in it. By now we’ve all heard of the “Law Of Attraction” and all the self-help shit that’s out there but what I’m talking about goes beyond that. A lot of what’s being sold to help the common person feel empowered again is only partially the deal. This is exact science (more…)

This is my newest piece I titled “Return To Innocence” . . . I’ve had this piece in my head for about 2 years but haven’t painted it until now and as I’ve realized there was a reason for the timing. I can’t tell you how many rough sketches I have of this concept in those two years. I guess I was saving it for when I felt compelled to paint it. First let me tell you what this piece stands for, the themes involved, how it relates to me and my life, and why I decided to go with a Mayan warrior. This piece represents a man’s struggle to find himself, his spirituality, his innocence even after he’s been through the jungle of life with his hands still soaked in blood. A man . . . a real man goes through a lot of changes in journey to find his higher self. Beyond the ego, beyond the warrior spirit (more…)

Now I don’t know how spiritual you may be but please don’t think this is necessarily a spiritual post . . . it’s just what’s been going on in my mind which has translated into life. I hope it helps you overall if not at least help you realize some things concerning your own life. Let me start off by saying that the mind is a muscle . . . and like muscles it must be worked. And that’s whatEVER you set your mind to do. If you’re anything like me you have periods (usually like 2-5 days) where you’re extremely focused on something, success, love, accomplishing some abstract mini goal, or whatever. Then when you break these tasks into smaller goals you get lost in the details. It’s like of like when I’m drawing, I start off sketching the general shapes and I’m so pleased because I love the progress, it’s a beautiful and simple stage. But then as I start zeroing in on certain details of the drawing I take a broader view of if and realize the details in the section I was just working on doesn’t look quite right.

It frustrates me so either I erase and get back to the overall concept and rework or I (more…)

I’ve been observing the work of some outstanding Japanese artists lately and decided to go out of my element a little bit. I love some of the concept art from the Street Fighter video games. I’ve also been listening to some modern Japanese music just to get in the spirit while painting this . . . I know it sounds kind of weird but hey . . it’s what dedicated artist do. ‘More to come as I’m expanding my entity online. The Twitter, Facebook, etc account info and links coming up on this blog so stay tuned. Til next time folks!
